The controller-general of France in 1759, Etienne de Silhouette, was a frugal man who kept himself entertained by cutting the portraits in paper that would eventually come to be named for him. The essential principle of these works in light and darkness would, a hundred years hence, provide the basis for photography and the cinema as we know it.
